Traineesevaluate the content of a given course, basic requirements, andexpected outcome before making a decision to enroll in a trainingprogram. Course description is a statement describes the keycomponents of the course (Stanford University, 2015). The keycomponents of the course description should title and the number ofthe course, outcome of the course, brief summary of topic or units,pathway or the sequences in which training will be conducted,prerequisites, fees if applicable, and registration information(Study, 2015). This course description includes a two-week trainingprogram that target two groups, namely work-ready andworkforce-reentry.

Work-readytraining course (WRT 101)

Thework-ready training course is designed for graduates who are eitherlooking for their first job or work as temporary employees and intentto find long-term employment. The course examines the key soft skillsand workplace culture that exists in the health care sector. Inaddition, the course explores the basic skills that graduates andpotential employees in the health care sector need in order toincrease their chances of securing a job or getting a long-termemployment.


  • At the end the two week training program, each trainee should be able to

  • Identify the core values and ethical standards observed in a healthcare workplace

  • List some skills required for effective communication

  • Define the customer-centered care

  • Identify key soft skills needed in a health care setting

  • Determine specific roles and responsibilities for different types of jobs in the health care sector

Thecourse, WRT 101, is divided into five units as follows

Unit1: Workplace culture

Workplacevalues and ethical standards are some of the key determinants oforganizational success. This unit explores key values that are commonin workplaces, especially in the health care organizations. Some ofthe values included in this unit include compassion for patients,respect, efficiency, quality, honesty, responsiveness, caring,loyalty, and integrity.

Unit2: Communication skills

Communicationin the health care is considered to be the backbone of quality healthcare because it facilitates an interaction between health careprofessionals and between a health care provider and the client.After undertaking this unit, trainees are expected to have basiccommunication skills that will help them communicate with all typesof patients, including those with hearing difficulties. The keyskills considered in the unit include, hearing, listening,open-mindedness during a conversation, non-verbal cues, concision,and clarity.

Unit3: Customer service

Trendsin customer behavior indicate that clients are more interested in thequality of services and how the vendor values them (Shaller, 2007).The unit prepares trainees to work in an industry in which clientvalues guide nearly all clinical decisions. The unit on customerservice is designed to equip trainees with skills that will help themdeliver patient-centered care. The unit explores the six elements ofpatient-centered treatment, which include

  • Accessibility and free flow of information

  • Respect for patient preferences and needs

  • Team management and collaboration

  • Sensitivity to spiritual and other non-medical dimensions of health care

  • Family and friends` involvement

  • Shared knowledge and education

Unit4: Soft skills for effective service delivery

Workingin a health care sector provides individual employees with numerousopportunities, but it comes with an equal share of unique challenges.The unit “Soft skills for effective service delivery” isspecifically designed to equip trainees with some soft skills thatwill help them handle the unique challenges that are likely toencounter while working in the health care sector. The themes coveredin this unit are considered below

Dealingwith work-related pressures:Trainees expect to work in an industry that is characterized with theshortage of health care service provides, which makes it necessary toprepare them to work under pressure. After covering this theme,trainees should be psychologically prepared to serve a large numberof patients in each working day with minimum breaks, but stillmaintain the desired level health care quality.

Positivemental attitude:After covering this theme, trainees should be prepared to facedifficult days, work with difficult employees, and serve difficultpatients. This sub-topic equips trainees with skills that will helpthem see work-related challenges as opportunities to learn.

Flexibility:Flexibility is a critical soft skill in the health care sectorbecause the nature of the tasks and shifts are almost unpredictable.After covering this theme, trainees will be prepared to work forextra shifts without complaining, be ready to be called back to workwhen they expect to be recess on leave, be assigned unique tasks.

Dealingwith criticism:Health care professionals do not know everything and the industry isdynamic, which implies that new knowledge is being added into thefield each day. This sub-topic will equip trainees with the skillsthey need to accept criticism and learn from it.

Unit5: Roles and responsibilities

Theability of member of staff to understand the respective roles andresponsibility enhances efficiency and reduces confusion at theworkplace. The unit on “Roles and responsibilities” is designedto help trainees appreciate the fact they can only carryout tasksthat are described in their employment contract or other tasks thatmay be assigned by their managers. At the end of this unit, traineesshould be able to understand

  • Their respective roles

  • How their roles and responsibilities are related with those of their co-workers

Workforcere-entry training course (WRT 102)

Thecourse WRT 102 is specifically designed for health care professionalswho intend to return to work after a break irrespective of thereasons that made them take the leave. The course also targets formerprisoners and health care professionals recovering from differenttypes of addiction and wish to re-enter their respective communitiesand return to work. This course addresses fundamental skills thathealth care professionals should possess before returning to work.The main objective of the course is to equip health care providerswith skills that will help them be accepted back in the industry andcatch up with new developments that have take place in the healthcare sector. At the end of the course, trainees are expected to beable to

  • Describe interpersonal communication skills

  • Identify key technological concepts applied in the health care sector

  • Explain the significance of job readiness

  • Describe factors that enhance job retention

  • Explain ways of achieving job advancement

  • List some job placement agencies

Thecourse is divided into six units as considered below

Unit1: Interpersonal communication skills

Apartfrom passing the message to the targeted audience, sharing feelingsand meaning is critical in a health care setting. To this end, thecourse unit “Interpersonal communication skills” is specificallydesigned to equip trainees with interpersonal skills that will helpthem interact and communicate effectively with clients andco-workers. The course unit covers several themes that include

  • Assertiveness in communication

  • Management of emotions in communication

  • Dynamic listening skills

  • Communicating with tact and diplomacy

  • Negotiating and influencing skills

Unit2: Modern technology in the health care sector

Technologyis increasingly becoming a basic requirement in the health caresector. The objectives of the unit are to help trainees perform theirduties more efficiently, effectively, and accurately. This unitcovers the basic computer skills that health care providers need tocarry out their day-to-day functions, such as recording and storingclient’s information. The unit also covers the use of smart devicesin the health care industry. The key themes covered include

  • Word processing

  • Web browsing

  • Database management

  • Communication programs

  • Electronic health records management

  • Smart devices

Unit3: Job readiness

Betterpreparation and a positive attitude are key principles that guideindividuals looking for second chance’s employment readiness. Theunit “Job readiness” is designed to prepare traineespsychological for new roles or work settings. By the end of thiscourse unit, all participants are expected to be able to breakpersonal barriers to become self-sufficient, develop career plans,and develop a resume. The unit will also help trainees acquire newjob skills and interviewing techniques.

Unit4: Job retention

Thejob retention unit has been prepared to equip participants with somebasic skills that they need to keep their jobs once they find them.The specific factors considered in the unit include the relationshipbetween the employee and the employer, co-workers, and the jobitself. The themes covered in the unit include

  • Time management

  • Techniques of upwards and downwards communication

  • Avoiding backstabbing

  • Being a team player

Unit5: Job advancement

Gettinga job is one thing and progressing in one’s career is a differentthing. The course unit “Job advancement” is designed to motivateand show people returning to work on how they can progress in the newjob. Several themes are covered in the unit, including

  • Importance of further education

  • Significance of regular staff training

  • Enhancing competitiveness in the job market

Unit6: Job placement

Someindividuals may get job placements even without searching employmentopportunities, but they still need to be trained in order to helpthem meet the employer expectations. The job placement unit aims atintroducing individuals who wish to return to work to job placementagencies. The unit informs potential job returnees about the possiblelong-term and short-term job placement opportunities, how to identifyvacancies that respect their physical as well as psychologicallimitations, and provide them with meaningful employment skills.

Thetwo weeks training takes place in 10 working days, Monday-Friday.Some units for WRT 101 and WRT 102 will be offered in the same day.The training programs will start at 8: 30 am each day.

Prerequisites:Traineesmust have attained at least a diploma in health care related courses.

Traineeswill register at the university and pay a registration fee of $ 200.

Coursesincluded in a training program are designed to achieve someobjectives and specific needs of a given group of trainees. In thepresent case, the two courses (WRT 101 and WRT 102) address containunits that meet the needs of work-ready and workforce-reentry groupsof trainees. The main objective of the training program is to preparethe two groups for employment and help them work effectively oncethey find employment.


Thevocational training program targets two groups of trainees, includingthe work-ready and workforce-reentry. Since the two groups havedifferent training needs, the vocational training program will bedivided into two parts, namely the Work-ready training course (WRT101) and Workforce re-entry training course (WRT 102). Each of thetwo parts has different units that serve the needs of respectivegroups. The Work-ready training course will be delivered in fivemodules. The first module, the workplace culture, will informtrainees about the key workplace values and ethical standards. Thesecond module, communication skills, will equip trainees with basicskills that they need to communicate at the workplaces. The thirdmodule, customer service, will equip trainees with client-centeredcare skills. The fourth module, soft skills, will prepare trainees toface challenges and work-related hardships. The fifth module, rolesand responsibility, will help trainees understand that each jobposition has different roles, but they complement each other.

Thesecond part of the training program, Workforce re-entry trainingcourse (WRT 102), targets individuals who left their jobs fordifferent reasons (such as incarceration, addiction, and voluntaryleave), but would like to return to work. The course is divided intofive modules that address specific training needs of the workforcereentry trainees. The first module, interpersonal communicationskills, will prepare trainees to interact and share information aswell as feelings with coworkers and clients. The second module,modern technology in health care sector, will equip trainees withbasic technology skills required in the health care sector. The thirdmodule, job readiness, will prepare trainees psychologically foremployment opportunities. The fourth module, job retention, willinform trainees on how to protect and retain jobs once they acquirethem. The fifth module, job advancement, will inform trainees on howthey can move from one job position to the next one. The sixthmodule, job placement, will inform trainees about the local jobplacement agencies that might help them acquire jobs easily.

Thetraining will take place in two weeks (10 working days) where eachmodule will take three hours. In addition, trainees will register atthe university and pay a registration fee of $ 200.
