Workingas a team or in a group has become one of the architects of majorsuccess not only at the individual level but also at societal andbusiness level. Being an environmentalist in terms of my likes whenbeing free, I have looked forward to participating in environmentalchanging actions such as planting trees, cleaning towns, and educatepeople on how to take care of the environment as well as theimportance of environmental care. Being a Chinese, I frequentlytravel to my homeland during holidays. Since 2013, I have been amember of an environmental protection group made by youngenvironmentalist. ‘Beijing Youth for Environment’ is the groupthat was established 2 years ago with the main focus beingenvironmental care.
BeijingYouth for Environment is a non-profit making organization that isfocused on environmentally oriented actions to change and protect theBeijing environment from pollution. The group was established in2013, with 15 members, and has been dealing with local environmentalissues such as cleaning towns, clearing drainage, and planting oftrees. Apart from personal contributions, the group also gets itsfinances from well-wishers.
Thereare different phases that a group undergoes during its development.With reference our group, the group is currently at performing stage,which entails achievement of the group objectives and goals.
Phase1,this is known as formation stage and is characterized by a group ofpeople coming together and sharing a common idea. With reference toour group, the group was characterized by friends coming together andsharing common ideas with reference to environmental issues affectingour town. Every person was positive and polite to each other. Theformation stage lasted only for a week, as it required noformalization but just working together.
Phase2is the storming stage that was characterized by group membersquestioning the leadership of the group, as well as how to lure moremembers into the group. Since the group was established on afriendship basis, there was conflict on who was to be the recognizedleader. In addition, people were not agreement as what would be themaximum number of people, and how they will be recruited. This led toconduction of elections to identify leaders for the group and theprocess lasted for a month. With established leadership, the groupwas now running smoothly and into the next phase.
Phase3is the Norming Phase. At this stage, the leadership had already beenestablished, and differences among members were resolved, andappreciation between members was noted. The team identified a workingrelationship and respect for the chosen leaders. The norming processlasted for a month.
Phase4is Performing which is characterized by the achievement of the groupset goals and objectives as members work together for a common goal.The group was also characterized by the easy running of the group,easy delegation of duties with Phasefiveminimal conflict among members. It feels good to be part of thegroup. Finally, there is, which is adjourning.With reference to our group, it’s yet to arrive at this, as it’sstill functional, and yet to be disbanded.
Despiteits existence, the group hasn’t avoided conflict. In addition toconflict on the selection of leaders, the group was faced with thequestion as to how to lure more members into the group. With thetarget group being to make it 30 members, there was a conflict as towhich was the best way to capture the additional members to make therequired number. As there were different choices raised by themembers, the conflict was resolved by voting in two best approachesthat would use to recruit new members. This allowed for theparticipation of every member and in turn the resolving of theconflict. Finally, the group cohesiveness is defined by group, pride,friendship and task commitment.
