Thefield of nursing is one that encompasses some factors and as such itneeds the most qualified individuals. One field that has seen so muchfocus in the field of nursing is the scope of taking care of theelderly. The geriatric population is one that has increased in therecent past and that has been proven by the fact that in Hawaii thepopulation composed of the elderly has risen to 10.63%, and that isexpected to continue growing. The community around the old might feelthe pressure of having to take care of the elderly because thepopulation has significant issues that need to be handled.

Thenursing role under consideration, in this case, is the role of agerontology nurse. That means that one is trained on how to work withthe elderly population whether they are within the healthcarefacilities or at home. That means that one trained as a registerednurse would require additional skills to help them deal with theelderly and offer the specialized care that they may need. The roleof the gerontology nurse includes working with the population withinwhich the geriatric population is found and getting them to coexistperfectly (Lee, 2015). They are also expected to instill positiveattitudes within all those that they deal so as to achieve theultimate objective of the profession that is ensuring the elderly aretaken care of. The primary interest in the role is that one can workwith an otherwise neglected part of society and through that they canadd value to the community by lifting the social and economic burden.

Forone to be involved in taking care of the elderly, one needs to betrained on how to handle the fragile part of the population. Oneneeds to have a positive attitude inculcated in them such that theycan view their patients as part of the community and not as a burden(Liu, Chang, and Chao, 2015). They also need to undergo servicelearning where they are trained on how to link the aging populationwith the rest of the community through an inclusive process. Theeducational preparation also includes the use of applied researchmethods that will give hands-on skills. The academic developmentswill also involve four steps that are the active experimentation,strong experience, reflective observation, and abstractconceptualization (Lee,2013). That will ensure that one can handleall that they go through in the course of their service to thegeriatric population.

Thereis training required for one to be allowed to work with the geriatricpopulation since being a registered nurse does not guarantee successin handling the aging population. One would need to undertakecommunity services that involve dealing with the population in whichthe target group resides and helping them appreciates the importanceof the old in the community. One would also have to undertake 16hours of class time where one is trained on how to handle thetheoretical concepts of the population, and they will have to take 16hours of community service (Liu, Chang, and Chao, 2015). One wouldalso need to take 4 hours of evaluation where they are to look at thecommunity as well as their achievements towards the desired outcomes.

Forone to be allowed to be a gerontological nurse, they would have toundergo a certification process. One needs to be a registered nurseand be an active RN with a license from a state or a territorywithin the United States of America (Lee, 2013). One would also needto have practiced as a full time registered nurse for the last twoyears as that would yield the required experience. One also needs tohave done a minimum of 2,000 hours of full-time practice within thelast three years. The last requirement process for certification isthat one needs to have undertaken 30 hours of continuing education ingerontological studies within the last three years. After fulfillingall the processes listed above one would then be allowed to work as agerontological nurse.

CaseStudy

Evelynis a patient who is the age of 87 years and is experiencing an issuewith VHC. The patient is a lady, and their age dictates that theyfall within the geriatric population, and they are having problemswith vaginal bleeding. They have been bleeding for the last five daysand as such Evelyn is experiencing health issues due to the continuedblood loss. Within the last three days, she underwent a syncopeepisode while she was showering and that prompted her to be rushed toa healthcare facility. Evelyn has also been diagnosed with low bloodpressure that is at the level 88/62, and they are also experiencingfatigue. The fatigue has been caused by the fact that they arebleeding, and they are losing blood and their hemoglobin levels arelow hence the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood is low.

Thediagnoses for Evelyn suggest that the fatigue is due to bleeding suchthat the hemoglobin levels are at 5:5 and the hematocrit is at 18:1.That clearly indicates the need for urgent medical attention forEvelyn and that is why she was transferred through a 911 although shestays at a nursing home. The plan in the case is to ensure that theycan return the BP to normal levels within the next 24 hours. Theywill also need to monitor the bleeding in Evelyn so as be able tocontain any outlier occurrences. The intervention in the case was toinvolve increasing the PO fluids especially with each meal, and thatwill help Evelyn in regaining some of the lost fluid and reduce theskin paleness (Liu, Chang, and Chao, 2015). She will also besubjected to Iron pills as that will help in the formation ofhemoglobin to increase oxygen carrying capacity of the body, and theywill also be given a pack of RBC to help boost their cells. The laststep that is evaluation will involve the act of reporting the labsand checking the PO record.

Thenursing standards have been clearly used in the above case study suchthat there is an assessment where Evelyn’s case is broken down.There is also a diagnosis where the case study explains what is goingon in her life and looks at the data to get the issue that is vaginalbleeding. The study also looks at the outcome identification, andthat looks out what they hope to achieve in the long run. The fourthstep in the nursing standards is the planning phase where looks atthe intervention and their relation to their outcomes in the casestudy the response have been listed such as the increase in PO fluids(Lee, 2013). The fifth step is the implementation phase thatincludes coordination of care as in the case of Evelyn andconsultation that Evelyn will undergo. The last step in the processis the evaluation phase, and Evelyn undergoes the process through theaction of having the PO records checked.

Thereport above focuses on a nursing profession that is gerontologicalnursing, and that involves the act of dealing with the elderly in thesociety. The focus is on how the nurses can be trained to handlecases in the field of gerontology. It also looks at the nursingstandards as well as how the standards relate to the case study thathas been developed.
