Pursuinga new profession and career leaves a person with many questionsaltogether: DoI quality to handle the job? Is this job right for me? Do I have therequired skills?Setting professional goals is very crucial in nursing careers(Shewchuk,Connor, &amp Fine, 2006).Healthcare is so broad and after completing my career I would like tobe a registered nurse who can manage health cases. Every healthadministrator acts as the case manager and is supposed to workindependently and work towards delivering quality services and usehealthcare practices that are safe for the patients. This includescustomized healthcare services to the patients. Consequently, I amconvinced I need to have the skills required to include in my resumewhen hiring a job in health administration. It is clear that hiringmanagers in healthcare look for specific skills as seen in theAmerican Council for Health Care Executives (ACHE) Career Managementwebsite each job category gives the skills requirement for one to behired. As a result, the gap analysis examines the skills that I haveacquired and the ones that I will need to possess in my career. Afterrealizing what skills I have and the ones I don`t have, it would beeasy for me to prepare well when searching for a job and/or attendinginterviews.

SetGoals in the career

Afterexamining myself and the career I am taking, I am convinced that Iwant to be employed in the health care facility where I can work inthe emergency and service department. In this gap analysis, I willhighlight my three goals that are geared towards working as anemergency attendee in the service emergency department in a healthcare facility. The goals include

Iwould be happy to get a job in an assisted-based community either asa health administrator or a registered nurse (health administrator ismy priority)

Iwould like to finish my nursing career with a doctor of philosophy(DrPH)

Iwould like to in a busy facility and embrace the sense of teamworkwhen handling emergency housing.

Requiredskills for a health administrator

Administratorin the health care is responsible for ensuring day-to-day activitiesin a hospital, management care and clinic services go on smoothly. Mypassion is to work as a hospital administrator in the emergencydepartment. As a result, to fit in this career I need to own moreskills required to handle the career. Firstly, health administratoris supposed to coordinate all the operations taking place in theemergency department and all another department (Stefl,2008).The key responsibility is to make sure that the department isfunctioning as required vast skills and knowledge is a must. As partof the defined typical duties performed by a health administrator, Iwill require to perform the following:

  1. Liaisons with the hospital’s board of governors, heads of the department and the medical staffs to ensure health care operations are going on well.

  2. Organize, control, direct, and coordinate all medical and health services offered in the health department based on the hospital’s policies set by the board of trustees.

  3. Set rates and planning for the budget for the health services

  4. Recruit, evaluate, and hiring health assistance administrators, doctors, and nurses

  5. Develop new procedures that are required for quality services, assurance and patients’ treatments.

  6. Develop emergency department’s programs that enhance expansion in the scientific research.

  7. Planning for education and workshop for the new doctors in emergency departments and overhaul hospital.

SkilledI have gained so far

Tofit in the health administration career, I believe that I have gainedimportant qualities that are required to work as an emergencyattendant in the nursing healthcare. Firstly, I have criticalthinking skills that are paramount when working in the emergencydepartment. This is because the very registered nurse is supposed tobe able to assess the changes occurring in the health care facilityor the patient’s state this call for taking correction action suchas when to make referrals and so forth. I am convinced that I havethis skill at hand. Secondly, since the time I started my course Ihave developed detail orientation that makes me responsible andachieved a detail-oriented skill that is required when dealing withemergency cases in healthcare. This means that I am in a position tomake sure patients are getting the correct treatments, medicine, andcare at all times especially when handling emergency cases.

Thirdly,I am convinced that my emotional stability is okay. This is because,according to the requirements given in ACHE, a nurse handlingemergency cases is supposed to have emotional stability so as to copewith the human emergencies, suffering, and stresses (Lantz, 2008).Fourthly, I have gained organizational skills that are paramount toall people working in the health sector. According to Ingersoll etal.,2002, nurses usually work with several patients who need differenthealth needs and care. As a result, it is crucial to haveorganizational skills to take good care of the multiple patientshandled at one time in case an accident happened to a group ofpeople this is something I am in a position to do, and I have thesurety that each patient I will handle will have proper care.

Onthe other hand, a compassionate skill that include been sympatheticand caring is very paramount in the service emergency department in anursing career. I am convinced that I can work as an emergencyattendee because I partially have this trait. Currently, I think I amnot fully compassionate compassionate is a skill that is valuablewhen taking care of the patients between now and when seekingemployment I need to develop this skill. Lastly, I have promptspeaking skills. The nursing career required that all the registerednurses must be able to talk effectively when handling patients. Thisis because a registered nurse is supposed to take patients` healthconditions for health recording. I have the speaking skill that Ifeel will enable me to handle patients by encouraging them andassessing their health status for recording. Additionally, this skillwill enable me to explain to the patient how the medication applied,give healthcare instructions, and communicate the patients’ needsto the other nurses.

Skillsthat I need change or alter

Basedon the duties assigned to a health administrator, I am convinced I amnot fully equipped to handle the job. This is because a healthadministrator is supposed to have “sharp” business skills,innovation, and creativity to handle the long-term developments inobjectives and budgets, planning, and creation of efficient andeffective health care system that deliver quality services to thepatients who need emergency treatment (O`Connor,Trinh, &amp Shewchuk, 2000).Consequently, I need more training on how to do budgeting, how toplan and develop objectives in healthcare facilities. Secondly, Ineed to understand how administrator policies are evaluated,developed, and put into use in an emergency department when dealingwith staffs and patients this is because as a health administrator Imust know how to use and understand and follow the policiesuniformly.

Thirdly,I need to up my managerial and leadership skills as a healthadministrator in the emergency department. I lack adequate leadershipskills that are required to lead in the administrative position thatrequire discipline, commitment, and teamwork skills the doctors andthe staffs in the emergency department need to be guided on how towork as a team when dealing with emergency cases.

Planningtowards achieving these goals

Toachieve the above three goals I have planned to engage myself ininternships that are based on health administrative in a community orhospital health settings. This will assist in gaining experience,have continues practical and education in health administrativeduties, good performance, and gain leadership skills required in thecareer. The plan is valid because I am convinced I will either beabsorbed or promoted in the same hospital and be given anadministrative position with numerous responsibilities else I canmove to another setting with health administrative open position.

Professionalorganizations that will help me achieve these goals

Thereare some organizations that will help me in pursuing the set goals.Firstly, community health facilities are the first organizations thatare helpful towards meeting the goals. The community organizationthat offers health care facilities has advanced management, nursingpractices, and advanced assistance head of departments, unitmanagers, and other administrative positions in healthcare. Fromthem, I will learn how health administration`s responsibilities arecarried out. Secondly, experts in the business side of the healthcarewill be of great assistance in achieving these goals. This is becauseto achieve efficiency and effectiveness as a health administrative, Iwill require leadership skills such as negotiation skills,communication skills, and excellent judgment. These skills can onlybe gained from the business-health-based organizations.

Benefitsof using the career action plan to outline

Theoutline is crucial because it will boost my vigor when pursuing theadministrative health career. Additionally, the outline assists inmastering the interpersonal skills that are vital for a healthadministrator such as effective communication, teamwork, duties andresponsibilities assigned to the health administrators. As a result,the outline will play as the key source of information that supportthe idea of pursuing health administration as a lifetime career.
