Environmentalcontroversy

Thereare several environmental controversies in the modern world. The useof genetically modified organism in food production and agriculturalactivities has attracted a lot of controversies. The disputes thathave resulted into these controversies involve biotechnologycompanies, researchers, scientists and scholars, farmers, governmentagencies and regulators, nongovernmental organizations and advocategroups. The main causes of these controversies are related to thesafety of genetically modified organism in food production, whethergenetically modified food products in the market should be labeled, the role of the regulating authorities and government agencies. Thecontroversies have also focused on the objectivity of biotechnologyresearch leading to the adoption of this technology, the impact ofgenetic engineering on the environment, the long term impact ofconsuming genetically modified, their role in food security andimpact on farmers and food production. Although there is a continuumin the genetically modified organism debate, some concerned groupsand individuals have adopted extreme position, either opposing oradvocating for genetically modified organism in food production(Norwood, 2015). Advocates for application of genetic modificationtechnology in food crops have based their arguments on the fact thatno significant risks have been associated with these foods comparedto convectional foods. There are no documented ill effects orscientific research that has identified risk associated with thecurrently available GMO foods. Proponents have also argued that theapplication of genetically modified organisms in food production isthe only viable option for promoting food security in the world. Onthe other hand, opponents have argued that there are no adequate longterm studies that can guarantee the application of geneticmodification technology in food production. However, some groups andindividuals have taken a middle ground advocating for more strictregulations, labeling of genetically modified products and auditingof objectivity of biotechnology research (Norwood, 2015).

Immigrationis one of the most important phenomenons in the modern world.Immigration enables individuals to move from one country to anotherand establish permanent residence. The United States is considered tobe a country of immigrants and descendants of immigrants. Majority ofAmericans are either immigrants or descendants of immigrants. However, immigration issues and reforms are some of the mostimportant economic, legal, social and political issues in the UnitedStates. This is mainly due to the increased number of illegalimmigrants, especially from the south. Additionally, the securitythreats associated with immigrants, social issues such as stereotypesand discrimination and the economic impacts of immigration, bothlegal and illegal immigration has attracted a lot of controversies. The most significant controversy relates to illegal immigrants(Anderson,2010).Questions have been raised on whether immigration hurts the economy.Based on the alleged evils of illegal immigration, some groups andindividuals have advocated for strict immigration rules to curbillegal immigration. This has been based on the economic and socialimpacts of illegal immigration. They argue that basic amenities inthe United States, especially in areas habited by large number ofimmigrants such as California are overstretched. Educational, healthcare and correctional facilities are overused by illegal immigrantsresulting into fiscal crisis (Hoyt, nd). This is the main argument ofthe first article by Seper. On the other hand, some people haveargued that due to the huge contribution of both legal and illegalimmigrant to the economy, they should not be condemned by given legalcitizenship. Illegal immigrants take low wage unskilled jobs in thelabor market (Hoyt, 2004). While Americans are unwilling to takethese jobs, they play an important role in the labor market and theeconomy. The second article uses the case of Illinois to argue thecase in favor of legalizing illegal immigrant by highlighting howthey benefit the economy. Therefore, it can be argued that theauthors of the two articles ignore or do not consider the factspresented by the opposing side.

Environmental Controversy

Since scientistsplay an integral part in predicting environmental issues that areproven and others are disputed. It is important for scientists to beincluded in policy making process. The rules that are established bythe politicians should be reviewed by the scientists since they canresearch and come up with the solution. For instance, the issues ofglobal warming can be dealt with accordingly, if the rules set afterresearching the solution are followed. Scientists should be given avoice on environmental issues so that they can warn people about theissue. Additionally, politicians do not have the solution to theenvironmental issues (Lamb, 2005). Due to climate change the researchmay vary and sometimes their research is disputed, and it isimportant for scientists to be given a voice so that they can explainwhy the results have varied.

The lobbyists andspecial interest groups exert too great influence that obstructs thesolution to the environmental problems. Since whenever funding isprovided to deal with the environmental problem they divert the fundto other issues with an intention to make corrupt deals. Forinstance, the global warming that causes excessive flooding andexcessive heat that causes severe hurricanes fund should not bediverted rather should be kept so that if the problem is experiencedthey can come up with the solution to save individuals affected.

Pollution that iscaused by the waste from factories and motor vehicles, plastic toxinsand oil spillage are harmful to the environment (Lamb, 2005). Thegenetic engineering is another environmental problem that leads togenetic modification foods that are hazardous to human beings.Deforestation is another environmental issue that releases carbondioxide into the air resulting to more issues associated with globalwarming. The lobbyists use the environmental issues to exert toogreat influence so that the government can support them with fund butlater divert it to do other things instead of providing the solutionsto environmental concern.
