Therole of the internet in the field of communication is still highlydebated. One camp argues that the internet boosts communication. Theother camp holds that the internet kills conventional communicationskills (Tangient, 2015). However, the majority of scholars,technologists, and researchers agree that the internet has played acritical role of interconnecting computers and people across theglobe. Therefore, the internet has not killed, but rather it hasstrengthened communication in different ways.

Thetheory of constructivism holds that learning occurs when humanbeings, through experience and exploration, manage to attach theirnew experiences to the previous experience in order to build upon thetotal knowledge of the underlying phenomenon (Tangient, 2015). Basedon this principle, what the internet has done is not to killcommunication, but to offer communicators with a completely newexperience. This implies that proponents of the idea that theinternet has killed communication are resting the change brought bythe internet. The new platform requires communicators to use themedium of a machine that is quite impersonal to communicate withother human beings irrespective of their geographical distance. Thishas replaced traditional face-to-face or verbal means to conveymessages.

Thishas created a more efficient and an extensive alternative oftraditional communication platforms. The internet has increased thespeed of communication more than any other innovation (Withrow,2014). For example, an email takes seconds to reach recipient in anypart of the globe, compared to an ordinary mail that may take weeks.The internet has enhanced the speed of communication bet replacinghuman massagers with computers that do not require physical movementto convey the message. Therefore, the internet has allowed people toconvey messages and receive intended feedback faster than before.

Theinternet has also enhanced cost efficiency in communication. Costefficiency has been achieved in two ways. First, it cheaper to send amessage online (such as an email) than to sent the same message in anoffline way, such as an ordinary mail (Withrow, 2014). Secondly,preparing a message for offline conveyance is quite expensive thanpreparing a massage that is expected to be sent online. For example,printing a letter to be sent via mail require color and papers, whilethe same letter can be sent online without incurring additionalcosts. This implies that the internet has allowed communicators tosave on cost.

Inconclusion, the internet has not killed communication. Rather, it hasrevolutionized the field of communication by offering communicatorswith an alternative platform to share information across the globe.It has made communication faster and more efficient. In addition, ithas become more cost-effective to communicate online than offline.Therefore, there is no doubt that the internet is the mostsignificant innovation that has enhanced communication.
